jailer

jailer is used for managing FreeBSD jails from the inside. It takes care of the startup, shutdown and console. See the man page for details on how it works.

Included is injail, a utility (contributed by J. Quick) to test in scripts whether the current process is running in a jail or not. See the man page.

Note: No new releases of jailer jailer will be released barring security holes. On new versions of FreeBSD (past 5.1) jailutils include support for everything that jailer used to do.

Notes:

• Works with FreeBSD 4.x and higher.
• Although jailer sort of works on FreeBSD 5.1 and later, it's unnecessary and outdated. See the new jailutils versions for running jails without a jailer.
• Tested on FreeBSD 4.5 - 4.9.
• When upgrading from FreeBSD 4.x to 4.8 or 4.x to 5.x you'll need to rebuild jailer and reinstall it in your jails.
• Runs on FreeBSD 5.0 (release) but not tested thoroughly.
• No jail console support on FreeBSD 5.0.
• This is for use inside a jail.
